About Diabetes

In today's society, 1 out of every 6 Japanese people is considered to have diabetes or suspected diabetes, and diabetes has become a familiar disease to us all. Diabetes and its pre-diabetic stage, impaired glucose tolerance, can cause a variety of health problems. In particular, when serious complications such as diabetic nephropathy progress, dialysis becomes necessary. It is a heavy burden on the patient's body, and the quality of life (QOL) decreases.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the variety of therapeutic agents for glucose intolerance, and with it, an increase in the number of suitable treatments tailored to each individual patient. Our OMURA Clinic is staffed by board-certified diabetes specialists who provide appropriate medication methods of treatment for each patient. Our approach is based on customized treatment, and through lifestyle advice, we support your blood glucose control and help improve your QOL.

Do you have these symptoms?

Feeling heavier body than before.

Unusually thirsty.

Worried about losing weight.

My feet are strangely cold.

These symptoms may appear in the early stages of diabetes.

If you are concerned, we recommend that you consult your doctor as soon as possible.

Complications from diabetes mellitus

Diabetic neuropathy

The earliest complication to appear is neuropathy. As high blood sugar levels continue to persist, the sensation at the nerve endings is the first to be damaged. Specific symptoms include numbness in the toes and unnoticed pain from foot injuries or burns. Symptoms of autonomic neuropathy may also appear, including muscle atrophy, muscle weakness, gastrointestinal upset, dizziness, abnormal sweating, and erectile dysfunction.

Diabetic nephropathy

Diabetes mellitus can easily cause kidney dysfunction. The kidneys play an important role in maintaining the proper condition of the body by excreting waste and unwanted substances from the blood into the urine, while at the same time retaining necessary components in the blood. As diabetic nephropathy progresses, the function of the kidneys is impaired, resulting in a condition called uremia. In uremia, waste and unwanted substances in the body are not properly eliminated, and the condition worsens. As diabetic nephropathy progresses, treatment such as dialysis becomes necessary.

Diabetic retinopathy

The retina is a tissue within the eye that acts like the film in a camera. If high blood sugar levels continue for a long period of time, small hemorrhages or abnormalities called leukomalacia may appear in the retina. As the disease progresses further, relatively large hemorrhages may also occur. If the lesion has progressed in only one eye, it may be difficult for the patient to notice. Therefore, it is important to have the fundus examined regularly.

 Periodontal disease and Diabetes

When diabetes is not well controlled, periodontal disease is believed to worsen. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation, the presence of which raises blood sugar levels, making diabetes difficult to control. At the same time, the condition also makes periodontitis more likely to progress, leading to this vicious cycle. Conversely, aggressive treatment for periodontitis has been shown to improve blood laboratory values and improve diabetes status.

Abnormalities of urination

Take a long time to urinate

An enlarged prostate puts pressure on the urethra, narrowing it, and thus is suspected of causing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Sensation of residual urine

In women, it may be cystitis. In men, it may be benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostatitis.

Going to the toilet many times during the night

Suspected overactive bladder, interstitial cystitis, or cystitis.

Cannot urinate

There are three main causes: prerenal, renal, and postrenal. It is recommended to examine the patient once.

Blood in the urine.

Urolithiasis, prostate cancer, bacterial cystitis, or bladder tumor may be present.

Pain when urinating

Inflammation may be caused by urethritis, prostatitis, or urethral calculi.

DIALYSIS

Artificial Dialysis

In recent years, dialysis treatment has made remarkable progress, allowing patients to continue to work and lead a healthy daily life while undergoing dialysis. Dialysis is a treatment used to remove excess water and waste products from the body when kidney function has deteriorated. Blood is removed from the body, artificially cleaned, and then returned to the body to work in place of the kidneys. There are two types of this treatment, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, and the choice of which method is selected depends on the patient's kidney condition and lifestyle.
